thing are very different for assistants now then when I was an assistant in the late 80's. back then our responsibilities were syncing the film dailies to the mag audio, edge coding both with matching numbers, pulling selects with the editor, then assembling them into select reels, getting feet and frame counts on the negative to match with the work print cut and prepping all picture and sound elements for finish. It seemed like a lot more work but by comparison it was a walk in the park. I don't envy assistants today having with the shear amount of technical info they need to know, much more than their editors do in some cases.

I wonder how Steve feels when watching shows that he has edited with non editors and family members.

Don't know how an editor can be considered a button pusher - choice of angles, when to cut it's such an art. Of course it probably depends on how much freedom one has in those choices.

the state is the same in the UK!
there are these courses to give minorities a "leg up" into the world of television but the amount of people who actually make it up the ladder is very rare.
It's still a sort of cultural box ticking.
And the fact that America is far advanced with minority actors than the UK is at least something.

Hey Gael, It's Susan! It's been a while. I checked in to see if you blogged about comedy and there was Monty Python! Yay! Thank you!
I am realizing women really need to make a place for themselves in the comedy genre. We are smart and witty. Why are the men dominating this field with bathroom humor and women-as-bimbos? If there are any people out there looking to form a coalition of women comedy writers/directors/editors, let me know. We are a pretty scarce commodity.
Thanks for all your great work on this site,
Susan

T2i does record time of day code. Can't say it's SMPTE nor replaces it, but it's useful and better than starting at 00:00:00:00. So there's TOD code, but that's it.

Yes. Seems editing may come full circle – back to using your hands like on film – instead of merely using fingers to press and type on keyboard and mouse. Honored to hear from you, Jim. Thanks for all the great movies! BTW: The first editor I assisted was British. He cut using two cloth bags placed on either side of sync block like-machine. Forget the name of the machine and spent too much time searching for it on the Internet (Old and new meet again). Cheers.
